This article is about TOPIK's purpose, TOPIK eligibility, TOPIK levels and sublevels, TOPIK schedule, etc.

 

Hello, it’s OIA from Silla University's Office of International Affairs. In this post, we are going to introduce TOPIK, the Korean Language Proficiency Test! 

What is TOPIK? (*Test of Proficiency in Korean)

 This test will be conducted for non-native Korean speakers such as foreigners and compatriots abroad. It is supervised and organized by the National Institute of International Education of the Ministry of Education and has a two-year validity period.

➊ TOPIK Purpose of Test

- It presents the direction of Korean learning and expands the spread of Korean.

- It evaluates the ability to use Korean, measures the level, and uses it for academic and employment at Korean universities.

➋ TOPIK Eligibility

- Koreans are not allowed to take the test

- Overseas Koreans and foreigners who do not speak Korean as their first language

- A person who intends to learn Korean, such as an overseas citizen who is attending a foreign school or graduated from a foreign school

➌ TOPLK Potential Uses

-Serving as admission and graduation standard for universities in Korea.

-Applying for companies and public institutions in Korea and abroad.

-obtaining Visa for qualifications of permanent residency and employment, etc.

-taking courses under the Global Korean Scholarship (GKS) Program

-Serving as substitute credits and requirements of graduation for Korean majors in overseas universities.

➍ Conducting and Announcing TOPIK 

 In principle, the TOPIK test is conducted six times a year. However, foreign countries can be implemented it differently. If you are curious about the test schedule, you can check it on the website, and all implementation plans, including last year's test schedule, will be announced on the website last year.

1. TOPIK Levels and Sublevels

The test is divided into Topic I and Topic II. Topic I can be divided into sublevels 1 and 2, and Topic II can be divided into sublevels 3, 4, 5, and 6. This is determined based on the combined score obtained.

2. The Difference Between TOPIK I and II

TOPIK

-Section: Listening + Reading Comprehension

-Maximum possible score: 200.

-Type: multiple-choice questions (4 choices), with a total of 70 questions.

TOPIK

- Section: Listening + Writing + Reading Comprehension

- Maximum possible score: 300

- Types

 Listening and Reading are multiple-choice questions (4 choices), and Writing is Subjective questions, with a total of 104 questions.

The Writing section varies in scoring depending on the difficulty level, and the deviation is also large, so it may be difficult to get grades 5 and 6 if you don't get good grades in writing.

*Two types of Subjective questions

1) Complete-the-sentence questions (short answers): 2 questions

2) Essay: 2 questions (one intermediate-level question requiring a response of about 200 to 300 characters and one advanced-level question requiring a response of about 600 to 700 characters)

3. Attention: Test-Takers

TOPIK

(1) You must be in the test room by 9:20 a.m.

(2) You must bring your test identification card and ID card.

(3) Listening and Reading Comprehension are set in 100 minutes.

 

TOPIK

(1) You must be in the test room by 12:20 a.m.

(2) You must bring your test identification card and ID card.

(3) It is your responsibility to manage your time during the exam, and you must stop writing when the time ends. (In the case of the listening section, you must mark the answer sheet while listening to the audio. No additional time will be provided at the end of the listening section. In the case of the TOPIK II exam, you must work on the listening section during the first period and the writing section during the second period. If you get caught working on another section, it will be considered a violation.)

4. TOPIK Schedule

  This is the TOPIK test schedule for 2022. The test schedule changes every year, so you can check it on the website. Also, in the case of overseas regions, it may be different from the Korean reception date, so you need to check with the local receptionist. You can check the test results on the website at 15:00 on the grade announcement date.
